What to check before you buy

Outerwear takes more wear than anything else, so the details matter. Zips are the first thing to look at: we note any stiff or missing pulls in the description, and we photograph them. Check lining condition too, since underarm seams and the inside of pockets are where older coats wear thin first. Buttons should be counted against buttonholes, and we say so if a spare is stitched inside.

Fit is the other one. Coat sizing varies wildly between brands, and a size 12 oversized style can be roomier than a size 16 fitted one. Measurements are available on request before you buy, so ask about chest, shoulder and sleeve length if you are between sizes or want room for a jumper underneath. Our grades help as well: Very good means light wear only, Good means visible wear that we describe, and Like new means barely worn.

Common questions

How do I know a preloved coat will fit me?

Message us and we will measure the actual garment: chest flat across, shoulder to shoulder, sleeve and full length. We do this before you buy, not after. It is worth doing for oversized and longline styles in particular, where the label size tells you very little.

Are the coats cleaned before they are sent?

Yes, everything is checked and freshened before it goes on the site, and we photograph it in that state. Some wool and padded coats are marked dry clean only on the care label, so we pass that on in the listing rather than washing them ourselves. If a garment cannot be brought up to standard, we do not list it.

What does the condition grading actually mean for outerwear?

Most of our jackets and coats sit at Very good, meaning light wear with nothing that draws the eye. Good means honest wear we describe and show in the photos, such as a softened cuff or slight pilling on a collar. Fair is reserved for pieces with a clear flaw that we spell out in full.

Is there a downside to buying secondhand outerwear?

Sometimes, yes. Zips and press studs are the parts that age fastest on a coat, and a zip that works today may need replacing sooner than one on a new garment. We test every fastening and say if it feels stiff, but if you want years of hard daily wear from a heavy winter coat, read the condition notes closely and ask us anything before ordering.

Can I return a coat if the sleeves are too short?

You can. Returns are open for 14 days for any reason, so fit is a valid one, and the item just needs to come back unworn with tags where they were attached. Asking for measurements first usually saves the trip to the post office.
