What to check before you buy

Trousers and jeans wear in specific places, so it pays to read the photos and the grade closely.

  • Waistband and rise. Vintage and older high street sizing rarely matches current labels. Ask us for the flat waist and rise measurements rather than going by the size tag.
  • Inside leg. This is the number that decides whether a pair works. Check whether the hem has been shortened or turned up.
  • Stretch denim. Elastane relaxes with wear. A preloved stretch jean often sits slightly more generously than a new one, which suits some people and not others.
  • Inner thigh and seat. These are the first areas to thin or go shiny on denim and on smooth-woven trousers. Our photos show them where relevant.
  • Fastenings. Zips, buttons and hook-and-bars are all checked, but it's worth looking at how the closure sits in the photos.
  • Elasticated waists. Older elastic can lose its bounce. We note it in the grading if the stretch has gone soft.

We measure garment to garment rather than working from a size chart, because two size 14s from different brands rarely match.

What does the condition grading actually mean for jeans?

We use five grades: New with tags, Like new, Very good, Good and Fair. Most trousers and jeans here sit in Very good, meaning worn but with no faults worth flagging. Anything with fading at the knee, a soft waistband or a repaired hem gets described in the listing text and shown in the photos.

Is preloved denim likely to have stretched?

Honestly, sometimes yes. Stretch denim with elastane relaxes after repeated wear, so a preloved pair can sit half a size roomier than the label suggests, and rigid denim can go the other way after washing. Ask us for the measurements taken as the item currently is, and if it turns out wrong you have 14 days to return it for any reason.

How do you wash secondhand jeans when they arrive?

Every item is checked and freshened before listing, but we'd still suggest a cool wash inside out at home. Cool washing keeps indigo from fading further and stops printed lightweight trousers losing their colour. Skip the tumble dryer on anything with elastane, as heat is what kills the stretch.

What are delivery and returns like?

UK delivery is tracked and we dispatch within 2 working days, with free standard delivery on orders over £50. You have 14 days to return anything for any reason, and 30 days if something turns up faulty or not as described. Because each pair is one of one, we can't swap for a different size, so a return and rebuy is the way to go.

Nothing here in my size. What now?

New pieces go up most days, and trousers move quickly in the middle and plus sizes, so it's worth checking back.
