What to check before you buy a preloved skirt

Skirts wear in specific places, so it pays to look at the right details. Waistbands take the most strain: check the photos for stretched elastic, and read the grade notes for any comment on the fastening. Zips on the side or back seam are the second thing to look at, along with hook-and-bar closures at the waist.

  • Ask for the waist measurement laid flat. Skirt sizing varies a lot between labels, and a Topshop 12 and a Marks & Spencer 12 rarely match.
  • Check the length against your own preference. Mini, midi and A-line mean different things brand to brand, so the stated measurement is more useful than the style name.
  • Look at lining. Many midis and going-out skirts are lined, and a lining that has shrunk or split will pull the outer fabric oddly.
  • For pleated and check skirts, look at whether the pleats still hold a crease and whether the pattern lines up at the seams.

What does the Very good grade actually mean?

Very good means the skirt has been worn but shows no notable flaws in wear: no holes, no stains, fastenings all working. Most of the skirts here sit in that grade. Anything with a mark, a repair or wear we can see is graded lower and described in the listing, with a photo of the spot.

Are the skirts washed before dispatch?

Every piece is checked and freshened before it is listed and packed. We still suggest a wash or press on arrival, since skirts are folded flat for tracked postage and creases are normal. Care labels are left in place wherever they survive.

Do older Topshop and vintage skirts run small?

Often, yes. Skirt sizing has drifted larger over the years, so an older Topshop or high street skirt marked a 12 can measure closer to a modern 10 at the waist. Please ask for measurements on anything older rather than trusting the label, because sizing is the most common reason a skirt gets sent back.
